Medical Degree Diploma Rome, 1896

In Welcome to Maria Montessori's Study

Enjoy a virtual tour of Maria Montessori's Study, narrated as if she were guiding us herself:

In 1896, I earned my medical degree from the University of Rome. The journey to get there was anything but easy. My secondary school had not offered some of the required subjects for admission, and the academic world was very much dominated by men—many of whom were not particularly eager to welcome women as equals.

But I was determined. I studied diligently, overcame every challenge, and, in the end, proved myself among the best.

A small but telling detail: my diploma was preprinted for male students. And to correct this they had to manually add an "a" to the word "Signor" so that it would read "Signora Montessori." A subtle reminder of just how unprepared the system was for women to succeed in such fields.
