In 1939, during one of my London courses, my co-worker Claude Claremont commissioned Mr Frank Salisbury to paint my portrait. He had already painted many celebrities, among them English royalty, and Winston Churchill. His studio was quite close to the training centre - they were both in Hampstead.
He made this portrait as a historical record, and it was shown at various London exhibitions before it went on loan to the London college. I am wearing my black robes, with a pearl necklace, and a book which opens up to read Mammalina Eternale (instead of Mammolina). I am glad the portrait eventually found its way to my study here in Amsterdam. A copy was made later, which has a permanent home at the London training centre. And as an anachronistic comment, the painting has achieved exactly what Claude had hoped for: as a poster this portrait can be found in many Montessori schools around the world.
