Exciting job opportunity at AMI to help manage, preserve, and expand our historical collections
Association Montessori Internationale is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented archivist for 3 days a week to manage, preserve, and expand our historical collections. The ideal candidate will have a passion for history with a focus on the 19th and 20th centuries and the social sciences and will help ensure the accessibility of historical materials for research, education, and public engagement.
Your role will be responsible for the organisation, cataloguing, digitisation, and conservation of valuable historical documents, photographs, manuscripts, and other artifacts. You will work as part of AMI's small legacy team; together the team serves researchers, scholars, and the public to ensure that our collections are preserved and accessible for future generations. The team also creates content for a state-of-the-art archives website, offering deep knowledge on the work and philosophy of pedagogue Maria Montessori's and seminal publications.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in History, Library Science, Archival Studies, Museum Studies, Italian Studies, or a related field.
- A completed study in Archivistics A or B or post-HBO Archivistics in the Netherlands or an equivalent international level is a plus.
Experience:
- Minimum of two years of experience working in an archival, library, or museum setting.
- Experience with both physical and digital archiving techniques.
- Proficiency in archival management systems.
- Experience in website content writing.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Excellent English writing skills.
- Bilingual in Italian and English; a working knowledge of Spanish, French, German and Dutch is considered an advantage.
- Knowledge of historical research methods and the ability to interpret historical materials.
- Proficiency in handling delicate or sensitive historical materials.
- Familiarity with 19th century handwriting, especially in Italian and English.
- Familiarity with copyright and intellectual property laws relevant to archival materials.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of Photoshop, Acrobat Pro and FileMakerPro are considered an advantage.
- Strong understanding of archival standards, preservation techniques, and metadata schemas.
Working Conditions
- The functions is for 3 days a week.
- Ability to lift and move archival boxes and materials weighing up to 10 kg.
- Some evening and weekend hours may be required for special events, exhibitions, or public programming.
Starting Date and Location
- The applicant should live in the Amsterdam region
- As soon as possible but n.l.t. 1 January 2025
